Agricultural Exterminator License for my Farm

Can I use Class B or C pesticides on my farm if I hold an Agriculture Exterminator Licence?

Yes. You are allowed to use Class B, C or D pesticides on your own farm for most applications if you hold an Agriculture Exterminator Licence. You must apply pesticides according to the uses allowed by your Agriculture licence.

Can I use Class B or C pesticides in a greenhouse on my farm if I hold an Agriculture Exterminator Licence?

No. You must hold either a Greenhouse/Interior Plant Exterminator Licence or a Grower Pesticide Safety Course certificate to use Class B or C pesticides in a greenhouse on your farm.

As a Licensed Agriculture Exterminator, can I train farm workers to help me apply Class B or C pesticides on my farm?

Farm workers who use pesticides under the supervision of a Licensed Agriculture Exterminator or Certified Farmer must be trained and supervised.

Employees assisting Licensed Agriculture Exterminators must be trained as Technicians.

Technicians must successfully complete an MECP approved pesticide safety training course and receive practical training from a licensed exterminator to use pesticides under the in-direct supervision of a Licensed Agriculture Exterminator and must comply with the conditions:

· cannot use any Class B pesticides, or a Class C pesticide that is an avicide, rodenticide, fumigant or suspension in air, except in the presence of a licensed exterminator authorized to use the pesticide.

· have readily available at the extermination site a work order, invoice, job sheet or other form of written instructions respecting the extermination in accordance with section 46 and 47 of Regulation 63/09 under the Pesticides Act.

Farm workers assisting a Certified Farmer must be trained as Farmer Assistants.

Farmer Assistants must either

participate in a Grower Pesticide Safety Course or
participate in a Pesticide Safety for Farmer Assistants training session presented by an On-Farm Instructor

Farmer Assistants are restricted from doing some tasks.

I have an Agriculture Exterminator Licence. May I train my farm workers "On-Farm" as Farmer Assistants and supervise their use of pesticides?

No. Licensed Agriculture Exterminators can only supervise Technicians. Certified Farmers supervise Farmer Assistants.

Restricted Entry Intervals

Restricted Entry Interval (REI) is the period of time after a pesticide has been applied that agricultural workers or anyone else must not do hand labour tasks in treated areas. The REI allows the pesticide residues and vapours to dissipate to safe levels for work to be done. Hand labour tasks involve substantial worker contact with treated surfaces such as plants, plant parts or soil. Examples of these activities include: · harvesting, detasseling, thinning, weeding, scouting, planting, mowing, roguing, and packing produce into containers in the field or greenhouse. You can only do these tasks after the Restricted Entry Interval has ended.

Water Soluble Packages

Water Soluble Packages (WSP) are designed to reduce exposure during mixing and loading. However, the Agricultural Handlers Exposure Task Force (AHETF) found that ► users were more exposed when using Water Soluble Packages than Wettable Powders. Exposure occurred when users sprayed high pressure water on the packets and/or intentionally broke the packets to help them dissolve. Use Water Soluble Packages properly to reduce exposure. Follow these handling and mixing instructions developed by the United States Environmental Protection Agency and the AHETF. Handling Instructions • Mix in the spray tank only. • Keep the WSP intact. Do not cut or puncture the WSP. Selling Class D Pesticides There are requirements that vendors must follow for the sale of Class D pesticides. The requirements depend on the product’s active ingredients and labelled uses. There are Class D products that can be sold to anyone. These products have: all their active ingredients on the Allowable List , namely the List of Active Ingredients Authorized for Cosmetic Uses.
